- Reconstructs the story of the Leni family of merchants and entrepreneurs, documented over four centuries of growing political prestige culminating in Julian Leni, who served as "curator" of the Fabbrica di San Pietro (the committee planning the re-building of St. Peter's Basilica) from 1514 to 1527, followed by the subsequent decline of the family, which became extinct in 1627 with the death of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Leni. The authors illustrate the vicissitudes of the more prominent members of the family, with detailed analysis of their finance, business and real estate investments; for example, nearly three hundred notarial deeds drawn up between 1517 and 1530 help delineate Julian's business activities.--Publisher's description
