- "The study illustrates the work of French and German artists and designers and their influence upon their British counterparts; discusses the programmes and work of a representative selection of British publishers and artists, and, in summarising the achievements of the period, considers such specific topics as social criticism and the development of children's literature. This pioneering study of a European phenomenon also includes appendices on aspects of wood- and steel-engraving in England, notes on French and German illustrators and a glossary of technical terms.
