Summary
Examines Jewish integration in English society, with a focus on Jewish life in London. Discussions and debates arose during this period regarding the Jewish presence in England. Argues that attitudes toward Jews were predicated upon perceptions of the Jews' similarity or difference to collectivities such as the nation or the working class. Because of the discontinuities in attitudes toward the Jews, attempts to categorize individuals, discourses, or institutions as antisemitic or tolerant, or to fix the degree of antisemitism or tolerance they displayed, prove to be inert. The Jewish issue arose in political argument as one facet of a debate between contending visions of the English nation. Since conceptions of the nation changed over time, so too did controversy over the Jews. Discusses, also, Jewish reactions to the pogroms in Eastern Europe, and British reactions to the waves of Jewish immigrants in the wake of the pogroms.
