Summary
The Lancerfish is not just a nuclear-powered submarine; it is the very latest model of U.S. navy attack boat. But cruising on the surface along the American coastline she is rammed by an outward bound freighter and goes down in 1235 feet of water - a depth less than her hull-crush limit, but beyond the reach of any available rescue bell. And her crew will remain entombed alive at the bottom of the sea until all their supplies of oxygen are exhausted or some form of rescue can be devised for them. For the survivors trapped in the doomed submarine and for those in charge of the rescue mission on the surface, the race against seriously deteriorating conditions below is a harrowing ordeal which spans four whole weeks of mounting tension. And when it is the Russians who come up with the only possible solution the crisis assumes a political and moral dimension since there are important figures in Washington who would sacrifice the men of the Lancerfish for their Cold war politics. -- Publisher's description
