- "Analyzing the impact of the reforms in nine countries, Barbara Stallings and Wilson Peres provide econometric evidence that suggests that economic reforms in Latin America have had a surprisingly small impact if one looks only at the aggregate regional averages: a small positive impact on growth and investment together with a small negative impact on employment and income distribution. Only by moving to the country, sectoral, and microeconomic levels did they find evidence of the reforms' strong effects. The reforms fostered investment and modernization, but at the same time they led to significant differences in performance: high- and low-growth countries, dynamic and lagging sectors, a gap between large and small firms, and a growing differential between the incomes of the well educated and the rest of the population. The result has been specialization and polarization, which implies both opportunities and challenges."--BOOK JACKET
