- Summary
- "To Labour's first Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, socialism meant not only 'satisfactory figures of death rates and...improved houses' but also the 'mental cleanliness, the moral robustness of our people'. This book explores the neglected theme of individual character and 'mental qualities' in British social democratic thought and Labour Party history." "The study starts by asking how important it was for the centre-left that citizens be 'good people'? Jeremy Nuttall considers the current state of Labour Party historiography, and ponders why the economic, institutional and social structural parts of the party's agenda have received so much more treatment than the role of 'good and bad character' in retarding or advancing social democracy. In five subsequent chapters, analysing the party's development chronologically from the 1930s up to the present, people's moral choices and psychology are the central theme. The book assesses both the role of moral and intellectual progress in the socialist writings of Labour's leading thinkers since 1931, and the question of how much of the characters of Labour leaders and the British citizenry themselves were determinants of how far Britain could move towards an egalitarian society." "Suggesting significant new directions in both Labour Party and modern British political history, the book should engage students and academics of history and politics."--BOOK JACKET
