Summary
In partial fulfillment of a Master of Fine Arts degree, this Thesis paper will document the scenic design process for the University of Arkansas' Spring 2007 production of Federico Garcia Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba. This paper will describe the design process that a set designer uses to develop a scenic design for the stage. This paper will attempt to answer the question of how a scenic designer contributes to the theatrical process by communicating and supporting the mood and themes of a play through the visual imagery of the set, specifically for Federico Garcia Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba. I will begin with a brief summary of the play, a discussion about Lorca and his work and the first public performance of The House of Bernarda Alba. In the second part of this thesis, I will discuss my role in the process of mounting this production and discuss the choices made in the design process. Finally, I will provide a self evaluation of my role in the production process and of the final product
