Summary
"'The awkward age' formed a fault-line in Victorian female experience, an unusual phase in which restlessness, self-interest, and rebellion were comparatively permissible. Tracing evolving treatments of female adolescence through a host of long-forgotten women's fictions, Sarah Bilston investigates how writers thought about female adolescence before 'adolescence' was a term of currency. She discusses why women authors so often centred on adolescent heroines, and shows how representations of the turbulent, disaffected girl in popular women's literature during the second half of the nineteenth century importantly anticipated depictions of the feminist in fin-de-siecle New Woman writing. Conservative portrayals of girls' hopes, dreams, and subsequent frustrations helped clear a literary and cultural space for the New Woman's 'awakening' to disaffected consciousness. This book both historicizes the evolution and mythic appeal of the female adolescent and alerts us to suggestive exchanges between apparently diverse female literary traditions."--BOOK JACKET
