Summary
As a foreign correspondant during World War II Bruce Bacon made his mark as a courageous, articulate and professionally respected reporter on the New York Tribune. He had also gained some understanding of the moral dimension of civilization and the fragility of humankind. The end of the war found him in the political turbulence of India on the verge of independence and partition. The story he was pursuing led him unwittingly to make contact with members of the Communist Party and he found himself mysteriously hustled back to the United States. At first life is good. He gets leave of absence from the Trib to write his war book and he falls in love with Molly Maguire, a passionate and feisty young woman, brought up on the ideology of the thirties. But, too soon, Bruce is caught up in the notorious anti-Communist witch-hunts of Senator McCarthy's House Committee on Un-American Activities. Suddenly no one will publish his book. His job is gone and he is railroaded into jail by a congressional committee on which Richard Nixon is an active member. Through all this madness and the year in a West Virginian prison, Molly sticks by him. -- Publisher's description
