- Summary
- Britain began the 1990s with the longest recession since the 1930s and Europe generally seems sets for economic stagnation and mass unemployment throughout the decade. These developments have made the Maastricht Treaty and plans for the further economic integration of the European Community Inadequate at best as the need for the rest of the 1990s will be for policies to tackle unemployment. Such action cannot be limited to employment policies - positive fiscal, monetary, exchange rate, industrial and regional policies are also needed. With specialist contributions from 26 leading economists Unemployment in Europe sets out and analyses policies for growth. It looks at how government policy can influence unemployment and examines the lessons to be drawn from the past and the prospects for the future. Regional and industrial policies are studied and the book concludes with an analysis of how unemployment can be combatted. Unemployment in Europe will be essential reading for undergraduate students in Economics, especially Macroeconomics, Labour Economics and Industrial Economics, as well as for students in Politics and European Studies. It will also be enjoyed by anyone interested in economic policy
