Summary
"This study explores the lives and works of four major nineteenth-century children's writers: Juliana Ewing, Louisa Molesworth, Frances Hodgson Burnett and Edith Nesbit, who projected onto posterity a halcyon image of Victorian childhood. Behind the idylls that they strove to impart in their fantasy and family tales lay conflicts between realism and idealism, convention and radicalism. The Victorian age was a study in contradictions. Its core concerns - family, gender, morals, class, religion and death - are reflected in its most influential children's books and in the extraordinary lives of their authors."--BOOK JACKET
