- Summary
- "The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, which tells of the seduction of the shepherd Anchises by the love-goddess Aphrodite, has long been recognized as a masterpiece of early Western literature. This new commentary, together with a full introduction and edition of the text, is the most comprehensive study of the poem ever undertaken. The introduction considers the literary interpretation of the poem, parallels in Near Eastern literature, the language and style of the poet, the date and place of composition of the poem, influence on later literature, and the manuscript transmission of the text. The commentary deals with points of interest as they arise, from matters of textual criticism to broader issues of interpretation, and draws upon linguistic, literary, historical, and archaeological evidence in order to throw light on the text and the questions that it raises. The book is designed to be a lasting work for scholars and students of ancient literature."--BOOK JACKET
