- Summary
-
- "Nostalgia has been one of the most powerful discourses in the shaping of Western modernity, and a formative influence on the novel genre. Longing: Narratives of Nostalgia in the British Novel, 1740-1890 casts a different light on the origins and development of nostalgia by taking a close look at its role and representation in the British novel. It provides new insight into the ways in which nostalgia was transformed from a clinical condition into a celebrated emotional experience in late eighteenth-century novels of sensibility, was ridiculed after the genre's heyday, and became an enjoyed way of remembering in mid-Victorian fiction before it had to be defended against new pathologies of both longing and memory at the fin de siecle
- By revealing the origins of common misunderstandings about nostalgia, this book aims, moreover, to show that it creatively fosters a personal and imaginative memory."--BOOK JACKET
