Summary

This innovative qualitative research foregrounds an important, but neglected, work and family issue - the experiences of full-time workers who also care for a child with significant chronic illness or disability. The women in this study share a sense of disconnection from those around them, the extreme responsibility of being the primary, sometimes the sole, carer for the child, subject to ongoing and unacknowledged grief and the insensitivity or cruelty of those around them, including their workplace colleagues. The women also report their approaches to survival, at work and at home, and share uplifting stories of kindness and resilience in the face of considerable and sometimes overwhelming challenges. The stories are shared through evocative narrative explorations including data poems, interviews, fictional diary entries and constructed vignettes. Students, researchers and professionals in health care, management, gender studies, social policy and the sociology of the family will find this a stimulating and disturbing resource
